All, with opportunities, can reach unlimited goals.

A Kinship Assessment is a formal evaluation carried out by a qualified social worker to determine whether a relative or close family friend is able to provide a safe, stable, and loving home for a child who can no longer live with their birth parents.

What is Kinship Care?

Kinship care is when a child is cared for by a member of their extended family or someone they already have a close relationship with (such as a grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling, or family friend). It is often the preferred option for children who need alternative care, as it allows them to remain connected to their family roots, culture, and identity.

What Does a Kinship Assessment Involve?

The assessment is a thorough but supportive process that typically includes:

  • Several meetings and interviews with the prospective kinship carer(s)

  • Discussions about your family background, relationships, and parenting experience

  • A review of your home environment and living arrangements

  • Checks on health, finances, and support networks

  • Criminal record (DBS) checks and references

  • Exploration of how you would meet the child’s emotional, educational, and cultural needs

The goal is to understand your strengths as a carer and identify any support you may need to care for the child long-term.

Why is a Kinship Assessment Important?

It ensures the child’s safety and wellbeing while giving you a full understanding of the commitment involved. A positive assessment can lead to formal legal arrangements such as a Child Arrangements Order, Special Guardianship Order, or in some cases, becoming a kinship foster carer.
